I’m always messing around with code. Here are a few fun things I’ve been toying with lately. Keeping in mind that most of work is done behind the scenes, I ask you forgive the utilitarian look of of these examples.

Crayola and 3D math:

View the demo: http://jackinscoe.com/crayola/colortest.php

What would Van Gogh’s box of Crayola Crayons be filled with?

I was intrigued by a friend, Meggie McArthur’s idea to take classic pieces of artwork and analyze them figure out what the artist’s palate would look like in Crayola Crayons. I wrote the code as a proof of concept. The application uses three-dimensional math to map the palate of any image to the closet Crayola Crayon color.

How old is your dog…really?

View the demo: http://jackinscoe.com/dogage/

This little experiment stemmed from a conversation my wife and I had on a walk with our dogs. Everyone has always heard that 1 human year is equivalent to 7 dog years. This didn’t seem like it could possibly be accurate to me because different dog breeds have different life expectancies and human life expectancy has risen over the years as well.

Using JQuery as the javascript framework and JQuery UI for the sliders you can calculate your dog’s would be human age. The life expectancy for each breed was pulled from the AKC.

This is one of my most recent pieces. I turned this rattle from a piece of walnut as a Christmas present for my unborn nephew, Thomas. It was all turned from a solid piece of wood and has 2 concentric rings.

Role: Co-Creator

ArenaJunkies.com supports the popular game, World of Warcraft. ArenaJunkies’ focuses on player versus player combat in the game. We support a large community of expert players who answer questions, create strategies and guides for newer players. One unique thing about this site is that it is an aspirational brand. A user has to reach a certain level of performance within the game before they can post in the majority of the forums.

I started a company with a college friend in 2007. ArenaJunkies began as a side project for our company, but quickly it had gained enough of a following that we took the project on full time. In 2008 I sold the website to Curse.com and I continue to run the site.

Instead, we focused on amplifying the difference between winners and losers.

In this execution free wifi is provided in public spaces like bus stops, airports, and cafes. However, there’s a catch. You need to be able to answer the daily Trivial Pursuit question that is simply presented as the network’s name.

Roles: Backend Development and data mining system

Hopeinrain.org is a fundraising website that was developed with a team from VCU’s Brandcenter in 2010 for UNICEF’s Tap project. The website provides a donation mechanism that is based on the amount of fresh, rain water your town has gotten in the last month, $1/inch.

My primary responsibility on this website was the backend development, PayPal integration, and building the data mining system that collects and regularly updates the rainfall totals from all of the listed cities. The data mining was the most interesting part of this project for me. Most existing weather API’s will return results about current weather or 7 day forecasts, but none that we could find have historic weather built into them. So I had to build our own system for gathering this data.

The system pulls the appropriate CSV file for the past month from wunderground.com, crunches the precipitation numbers. and finally updates the database to reflect the current rainfall in the past month. This is set as a scheduled task on the server through crontabs to update all of the cities in our database on a daily basis. The system can handle an arbitrary number of cities and throttles itself to prevent unnecessary server load.

A simple admin panel allows for monitoring for all the cities, manually updating the cities, batch process updating, and adding or deleting cities.
